Tom Evans is a British ultrarunner and former British Army captain whose rise in the ultra-endurance world has been nothing short of extraordinary. Known for his strategic approach, discipline, and resilience, Evans is celebrated for his numerous podium finishes and for competing in some of the world’s most grueling ultramarathons.
Tom’s journey into ultrarunning began almost by accident in 2017 when he entered the iconic Marathon des Sables on a whim, a 250-kilometer multi-day race across the Sahara Desert. Despite his limited ultramarathon experience, Evans placed third, making history as the highest-placed British athlete ever in the race. This result launched his career in ultrarunning and marked him as a serious competitor on the global stage.
Since then, Evans has achieved impressive results across a range of distances and race formats, establishing himself as one of the sport’s elite. In 2018, he claimed victory at the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc (UTMB) CCC race, a prestigious 101-kilometer event in the Alps. His success continued as he consistently placed in the top ranks of international ultramarathons, including the Tarawera Ultramarathon in New Zealand and the Eiger Ultra Trail in Switzerland. His crowning achievement to date came in 2023 when he won the highly coveted Western States 100-mile race in California, becoming the first British runner to win this legendary event.
Known for combining his military discipline with innovative training methods, Evans has adapted techniques from both his background in the British Army and cutting-edge sports science to enhance his performance and recovery. His work with high-profile trainers and sports scientists has further refined his skills, allowing him to maintain high performance over extended distances and grueling terrains.
Beyond his physical accomplishments, Tom is admired for his humility, dedication, and commitment to promoting the sport. He shares his journey openly, often speaking about the mental fortitude required to tackle extreme races, as well as the importance of balancing elite performance with personal health. Alongside his crew chief and best friend Brett Saunders, Evans provides insight into the mental and physical demands of trail and ultrarunning through events, podcasts, and training camps, inspiring runners of all levels.
Evans’ legacy as a pioneer in British ultrarunning and his approach to mental and physical conditioning continue to inspire a new generation of endurance athletes around the world. With each race, he sets a new standard in the sport, blending talent, hard work, and an unwavering passion for the trails.
